في هذه الرواية يعود فويار إلى إرهاصات الفظاعة ودور أرباب الصناعة الألمان في السلوكات النازية، وتواطئهم في التمهيد لغزو النمسا. في يوم 20 فبراير 1933 ببرلين، وبدعوة من رئيس الريخستاغ هرمان غورينغ، قدم أربعة وثمانون رجلا من رجال الأعمال البارزين لمقابلة هتلر في القاعات البرلمانية، من بينهم كروب وفون شنيتزلر، وفون أوبل، وكانوا يديرون شركات عملاقة أمثال باسف، وباير، وسيمنس، وأليانس، وتلفونكن… وقبلوا بتمويل النازية. هذه الشركات لا تزال حاضرة في حياتنا، تبيعنا الأطعمة والألبسة والأدوية والمستحدثات التكنولوجية، وتغنم منا أموالا طائلة، جعلتها تملك ثروات ضخمة، دون أن تخشى حسابا عن ماضيها ولا عقابا. لقد اختار الكاتب هذه اللحظة محورا لروايته التي يطرح فيها دور الكاتب في تمثل الواقع المنقضي، وكي يستعيد الفترة التي سبقت وصول هتلر إلى الرايخ الثالث، والعلاقات المشبوهة التي ربطها لبلوغ غايته، وبداية تطبيق ما استقرّ في باله من ضرورة الغزو لأجل مجد الجنس الآري الجرماني
