لقد قطعت اللسانيات أشواطاً كبيرة، وسارت في ركابها الترجمة، فأصبحت هذه الأخيرة جزءاً منها وعلماً يكاد يكون مستقل الذات عنها. وفي هذه الدراسة محاولة متواضعة ومشاركة بنصيب في الدفع قدماً بهذا العلم الذي إن أحسن استعماله واتقنت قواعده وفنونه وسيساهم لا محالة في التقريب بين مختلف الشعوب والأجناس ويزيد من المنفعة المتبادلة أخذاً وعطاء.
غير أنه، والحق يقال، صعب المنال عسير الانقياد وعر المسالك متسع المجال، فلا يكاد المرء يتحكم في باب ويستشف معالمه حتى يتداخل ويتشابك ويتجاذب مع غيره من الأبواب الأخرى، وإن كان كل واحد منها ينظر إليه من منظار خاص، ويتطرق إلى نقطة معينة تتكامل مع ما يسبقها أو يتبعها...
ومن أهم الأغراض المتوخاة من هذا البحث مقارنة اللغتين العربية والإنكليزية وتشجيع المترجم العربي على الوصول إلى كنه اللغة العربية واستغلال ما تتيحه من دقة في التعبير ومرونة في الاشتقاق وبيان في الأسلوب وليونة في التركيب.
ولقد تم الاعتماد على اللغة وفقه اللغة لإبراز بعض خصائص علم الترجمة. وبما أن "الترجمة عملية تتعلق باللغات، أي أنها يتم فيها إحلال نص في لغة ما محل نص آخر في لغة أخرى، فمن الواضح أن تستند نظرية الترجمة إلى نظرية اللغة، أي إلى نظرية لغوية عامة.".
...وتتصدر هذا البحث مقدمة عن الترجمة العربية، فيها محاولة إبراز ضرورة الحفاظ على الطابع اللغوي الأصيل، أي التصرف مع الدقة التي تستلزمها الأمانة في الترجمة. ثم إنه يتشعب ليشمل طرائق الترجمة والتبليغ ودراسة للجملة والمصطلح، وما يكتنف ذلك من مشاكل وعقبات. ونختتمه بلمحة عن وضع الترجمة العربي في الأمم المتحدة وضرورة التعاون بينه وبين الباحث اللغوي العربي والأجهزة المختصة العربية، ذلك أن هذا المترجم يعيش المشكل المصطلحي واللغوي العربي بأبعاده الدولية.
