إن الحديث عن التاريخ وفائدته من الأمور البديهية والضرورية في آن واحد، فمهما يكن من أمر قضايا التاريخ، فإنه صار ضرورياً وحتمياً لأصحاب التخصص العلمي في المجالات المختلفة إلى الرجوع إليه؛ إما لمعرفة خبرة السابقين فيما يستشكل عليهم من أمور تخص مجالاتهم، أو لتفسير وتوضيح أمر ما هم في أمسّ الحاجة إلى دراسته في أبحاثهم.
وحيث أن التاريخ هو (مخزن الإستراتجيين الذي لا ينضب) وإنطلاقاً من هذه الرؤية تم عرض هذه الدراسة في ستة فصول كالآتي: الفصل الأول: يعرض الآراء التي تناولت تعريف التاريخ وفكرته وأهدافه وفلسفته، واقتصر الفصل الثاني: على عرض للعصور التاريخية وتقسيمها زمنياً.
أما الفصل الثالث: فتم الحديث فيه عن مرحلة التدوين التاريخي أو الكتابة التاريخية والذي يسمى إصطلاحاً (تاريخ التاريخ)، وناقش الفصل الرابع: الإتجاهات أو المدارس التفسيرية المتعددة للتاريخ.
وفي الفصل الخامس: أوضح المؤلف ما يسمى بالعلوم المساعدة أو العلوم الموصلة للتاريخ وعلاقتها به، أما الفصل السادس: فانتقل فيه من الجانب النظري للتاريخ إلى الجانب التطبيقي المنهجي العملي.
