يعد تاريخ الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية محوراً من المحاور الرئيسية في دراسة تاريخ عالمنا هذا، حيث يعد التاريخ الأمريكي من الموضوعات الحيوية المهمة بالنسبة للقارئ العربي على وجه العموم وطلاب أقسام التاريخ على وجه الخصوص، ونظراً للعلاقة الوطيدة بين العرب وأمريكا.
وترجع أهمية دراسة التاريخ الأمريكي إلى أنه قام ولا زال يقوم بدور بارز في تاريخ العالم كله، رغم أنه لا يملك تاريخاً طويلاً بالمقارنة بتاريخ أوروبا.
وقد تناول المؤلف في هذا الكتاب نشأة أمريكا التي بدأت مع ما يسمى بحركة الكشوف الجغرافية مروراً بأحداث الإستقلال ووضع دستور للبلاد، ثم الحرب الأهلية الأمريكية ومبدأ مونرو الداعي لعزلة أميركا.
وبعد أن أصبحت الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية دولة كبرى في مطلع القرن التاسع عشر الميلادي أصبحت أمور أوروبا بل العالم كله تعنيها فبدأت تخطط الخروج من عزلتها بإعلانها الدخول في الحرب العالمية الأولى إلى جانب دول الحلفاء، ومع النمو السياسي والإقتصادي للولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، وتشابك ذلك بالعلاقات مع مختلف دول العالم وخاصة مع أوروبا أخذت المسافة بين أمريكا وأوروبا في المجال السياسي والإستراتيجي تقترب حتى أصبحت التطورات الأوروبية في أعقاب ظهور ألمانيا وإيطاليا واليابان والتوسعات الإستعمارية في آسيا وأفريقيا تحت الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية على إتباع سياسة معينة إزاء ذلك، فشاركت في الحرب العالمية الثانية، واستخدمت القنبلة الذرية ضد اليابان وكان ذلك أول إستخدام للسلاح النووي في تاريخ البشرية.
وشهدت الفترة الواقعة من نهاية الحرب العالمية الثانية 1945- 1989 تغييرات أساسية في علاقة أمريكا بدول العالم خاصة الإتحاد السوفيتي، فأصبحت الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية قوة عظمى في العالم، وخاضت الحرب الباردة ضده، ثم قيام النزاعات الدولية الكبرى التي هددت بنشوب حرب عالمية ثالثة أمثال الحرب الكورية (1950- 1953)، وقضية خليج الخنازير أو أزمة كوبا (أزمة الصواريخ الكوبية 1961) وحرب فيتنام 1964م، وقد كسبت أمريكا معظم هذه الجولات النزاعية ضد غريمها الإتحاد السوفيتي ونجاحها في الإنفراد بما أطلق عليه القطبية الأحادية.
