هذا البحث مساهمة في دراسة علم من أعلام العرب المشهورين هو "الخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي"، في جانب من جوانب نشاطه المتعددة وهو النحو، حيث يقتصر في دراسة نحو الخليل على كتاب سيبويه، وعلى دراسة النحو وحده دون الصرف، ولا يشير إلى شيء من مباحث الصرف إلاّ بالقدر الذي تدفع إليه الضرورة.
ويتوزع الحديث في هذا البحث على تمهيد وبابين وخاتمة: أمّا التمهيد، فيتألف من قسمين: الأول منهما يتحدث عن جهود النحويين السابقين للخليل، والثاني يتحدث عن حياة الخليل وثقافته ونشاطه العلمي وآثاره؛ وأما الباب الأول فيختص بالأصول النحوية وما اتصل بها من التعليل، ويقوم على ثلاثة فصول: الفصل الأول - في السماع، والفصل الثاني- في القياس، والفصل الثالث - في التعليل.
وأما الباب الثاني، فخاص بالحديث عن الفروع، ويقوم أيضاً على ثلاثة فصول: الفصل الأول - في العوامل والمعمولات، والفصل الثاني - في تحليل الأدوات والصيغ والعبارات، والفصل الثالث - في المصطلحات؛ وأما الخاتمة فتتضمن بعض النتائج والملاحظات العامة.
