إن هدف هذا الكتاب هو عرض النظرية الأساسية التي تمثل مجموعة أفكار أبي نصر الفارابي (المتوفي 339 هـ – 950 م) الفلسفية عن طريق تقصي الفكرة التي يلتئم بواسطتها شتات فكرة في جميع المجالات، وهي فكرة واجب الوجود، من خلال تحليل مجمل أفكاره وردّها إلى أسباب قوله بها. فتكون تلك الفكرة من فلسفة الفارابي بمثابة المثل من فلسفة أفلاطون. فكما أن فهم قول أفلاطون بفكرة المثال هو مفتاح فهم فلسفته كلها، فإن فهم فكرة واجب الوجود عند الفارابي هو مفتاح فهم فلسفته كلها أيضا. تعلق الفصل الأول بالميتافيزيقا، وبشكل خاص، الجانب الإلهي في تأسيس نظرية واجب الوجود عند الفارابي، مبتدئا بدراسة معنى الواجب والممكن ونشوء هذه الفكرة وتطورها وصفات واجب الوجود المرتبطة بوجوب وجوده. ثم عرض لدليل واجب الوجود، مثبتا صلته الوثيقة بالدليل الوجودي (الأنطولوجي) الذي قال به أنسلم وديكارت. وكاناهتمام الفصل الثاني بنظرية الفيض والطبيعة، وفيه تمّ إثبات أثر واجب الوجود في البناء الفيضي والطبيعي عند الفارابي وأن أنظمة الفارابي الطبيعية والميتافيزيقية مستندة إلى فكرة واجب الوجود عنده وإلى تقسيم الموجودات على واجب وممكن. ويبين الفصل الثالث فكرة واجب الوجود عند الفارابي. وفي الفصل الرابع، وهو الأخير، تمّ عرض بناء أنظمة الفارابي في النفس والقيم والمجتمع، على أساس فكرة واجب الوجود. وهنا تمّ التأكيد، أيضا، على أن الفارابي إلا بنى أنظمته في هذه الحقوق على وفق مقتضيات نظرية واجب الوجود عنده، من خلال فكرة واجب الوجود التي كانت هي الفكرة التي يقوم عليها بناء هذه الأنظمة جميعا.
