في غالبية الدراسات النظرية الحديثة يفضل استخدام المنهج التكاملي الذي يقوم علي العناصر الثلاثة الرئيسية وهي التحليل والمقارنة والنقد و قليل من هذه الدراسات يتخذ منهجاً واحداً في الدراسة.
ولهذا كان المنهج المناسب لدراسة فلسفة العقل ونظرية المعرفة عند الفارابي هو المنهج التكاملي حيث نبدأ أولاً باستنطاق النص الأصلي للفارابي في كل قضية أو فرع من فروع المعرفة ثم تحليله و فهمه والوقوف علي عناصره وغايته والتعليق عليها ثم مقارنتها بما يماثلها أو يخالفها من آراء لتظهر حقيقة رأي الفارابي في المعرفة، ثم توجيه النقد للارآء المخالفة والتي تبدو متناقضة أو متعارضة مع حقيقة فهم الفارابي ثم توجيه النظر إلي نقاط الضعف في بناء نظرية المعرفة كما قدمها الفارابي في مؤلفاته الرئيسية المعروفة وهي آراء أهل المدينة الفاضلة، السياسة المدنية، تحصيل السعادة، كتاب الحروف، كتاب الجمع بين رأي الحكيمين أفلاطون الإلهي و أرسطو طاليس وما به من رسائل تتعلق بالمعرفة العقلية من حيث طبيعتها ووظيفتها والعلم.
وأخيراً سوف نستعرض بعض النصوص التي تناول فيها الفارابي قوي النفس العاقلة وكيفية تحصيل المعارف و العلوم، ثم نستعرض بعض التناقضات التي وقع فيها الفارابي عند محاولته التوفيقية بين الفلسفة و الدين، وبين آراء أفلاطون وأرسطو، وكذلك محاولته عرض نظريته في العقول العشرة، و كذلك التمييز بين العقول من حيث طبيعتها الروحانية وعلاقتها بالاجسام، ثم تصحيح الأخطاء التي وقع فيها بعض الباحثين الذين اهتمو ببعض الفروع الفلسفية الفارابية والمتعلقة بالعقل والمعرفة، ثم بيان أهمية البحث في فلسفة العقل علي العموم و نظرية المعرفة العقلية عند الفارابي علي وجه الخصوص..
