ينظر الكثير من الدارسين إلى مقدمة ابن خلدون على أنها منقطعة الصلة بما قبلها، في محاولة منهم لإبراز وجه الأصالة فيها، غير أن مؤلف هذا الكتاب وهو يقوم بدراسة تفصيلية مقارنة لبيان الأصول الفلسفية للمقدمة التي كتبها ابن خلدون يؤكد على حضور الفارابي في ثنايا المقدمة، كما يسعى لإبراز أثر الفلاسفة المشارقة في فلاسفة المغرب الإسلامي، وهو في كل هذا يأخذ بعين الاعتبار الاختلاف واثر العمران البشري والنظم السياسية والاقتصادية في كل من البيئتين.
فقد تحدث المؤلف عن طبيعة المدينة الفاضلة وأنواع الاجتماعات الإنسانية وضرورتها وطبيعة السلطة والعمران البشري وصفات الرئيس وموضوع الأمة. كما تحدث عن موقف الفارابي وابن خلدون من تعريف الفلسفة وماهيتها وحدود التجربة الميتافيزيقية فضلاً عن الحديث عن موضوعات المنطق ومواضيع النبوة والرؤيا، كما لم يغفل المؤلف دراسة موضوع الإنسان وإشكاليته من حيث علاقته بالبيئة وعرج على دراسة التربية والتعليم والجاه والضبط الاجتماعي.
وقد خلص المؤلف إلى أن حضور الفارابي ذو النسق الفلسفي المنظم والمؤسس لموضوعات الفلسفة الإسلامية بشكلها المتعارف عليه في يومنا حضوراً بيناً وواضحاً في من جاء بعده وخصوصاً في ابن خلدون.
