يعرف بنك الدم بأنه مؤسسة صحية تعمل على تنظيم العلاقة بين المرضى والمتبرعين بحيث يستفيد أكبر عدد من المرضى من دم المتبرعين بشكل يمنع تعرضهم لأي من المضاعفات المحتملة أثناء التبرع بالدم أو نقله.
يحتوي هذا الكتاب على بابين، يتألف الباب الأول من اثني عشر فصل خصصت معظمها لدراسة المبادئ النظرية للنشاطات الفنية والإدارية الخاصة ببنوك الدم العلاجية، علماً أن الفصول الرابع والخامس والثاني عشر مخصصة لدراسة نظم المجموعات الدموية البروتينية والنظام الرئيسي في التوافق النسيجي والمجموعات الدموية في الطب الشرعي على التوالي، كما يتألف الباب الثاني من ستة فصول خصصت جميعها للتجارب العملية الخاصة بفصول الباب الأول.
تظهر في أول الكتاب فهارس خاصة بالأشكال والجداول الإيضاحية التي يحتويها، تم الجمع بين المصطلح الإنجليزي ودلالته العربية التي يرتئيها المؤلف لدعم التعريب وزيادة الإيضاح وحفظ التواصل بين الدارسين والفكر العلمي العالمي.
