أصبح موضوع حقوق الإنسان وفي مقدمتها حقوق الأقليات والحريات الدينية، من الموضوعات التي تشكل اهتماماً خاصاً للمجتمع الدولي والأمم المتحدة. وفي هذا الخصوص خرجت عدة دراسات مهمة في الخارج تتناول بقلق أوضاع المسيحيين في الشرق الأوسط وفي مقدمتهم "الأقلية القبطية" كبرى الأقليات المسيحية في المنطقة. هذا ورغم أن دراسة أوضاع الأقباط ظهرت منذ فترة في الخارج وكتبت حولها دراسات جادة ورسائل علمية عديدة، إلا أنها كانت من المحظورات في مصر، إلا أنه ظهرت في مصر مؤخراً عدة دراسات مهمة وأبحاث جادة تناولت هذه القضية المسكوت عنها منذ عقود طويلة.
ويمثل هذا مؤشراً مهماً لتناول هذه المشاكل على أرض وطنية بدلاً من استئثار الخارج بمناقشتها، رغم أنها قضية وطنية يجب مناقشتها بأكبر قدر من الصراحة والمواجهة بدلاً من الهروب وتوريث المشاكل حتى تفاقمت وأصبحت تمثل شرخاً واضحاً في الجسد المصري، وباتت تهدد تماسك الوطن ومصدراً دائماً لتشويه سمعة مصر في الأوساط الدولية. وهذا الكتاب "الأقباط عبر التاريخ" هو دراسة علمية جادة لأحد الشخصيات القبطية المرموقة، وداعية حقوق إنسان بارز، يناضل منذ أكثر من ثلاثين عاماً من أجل حقوق الإنسان من منطلق مصري وطني خالص. وهو ينتمي إلى واحدة من أعرق الأسر القبطية.
وكتابه هذا هو في الأصل رسالة دكتوراه قدمها إلى جامعة "أساس" في باريس تحت عنوان "حقوق الإنسان في مصر حالة الأقباط". وقد تم طبعها بعد ذلك لكتاب باللغة الفرنسية عام 96، وتمت ترجمتها إلى العربية لنشرها في مصر، والغاية أن يفتح هذا الكتاب حواراً جاداً على أرض الوطن، وعلى أرض المواطنة، وخاصة وأن مؤلفه لم يكتف بنشرة الكتاب باللغة الفرنسية وأصر على نشره باللغة العربية ليسهم في التعامل بجدية مع الملف القبطي.
