هل الماروني تائه في تاريخ طائفته، أم هو تائه في تاريخ منطقته، أم أن الباحثين تاهوا عنه، فرسموا له صورة تشبه الظروف السياسية التي أحاطت به، وفقاً لنمطية ذهنية، رأت إلى الجماعات، على أنها كتل "لا تاريخية" لا تخضع لنواميس التطور، بما فيها من تنابذ وتفاعل وتناقض وانفتاح وانغلاق؟ هل الماروني، هو ابن التاريخ أم أنه وليد الأسطورة؟ إذاً، ما هويته، وكيف تقرأ؟ هذه الأسئلة وسواها تشكل سلسلة من حلقات البحث العقلاني والتاريخي في هذا الكتاب، وفق منهجية نقدية، لا تستسلم للمسلمات الثقافوية، الشعوبية، السياسية، التي التصقت بالمارونية، وروجت لها، على أنها هي الهوية الحقيقية للمارونية، وهي الصورة الواقعية "لصيرورتها في الثبات" لا يترك المؤلف الأسئلة جانباً، يحملها إلى كل الأمكنة المسموحة والحذرة في آن. فيسأل عن مار مارون، هل هو أبو الطائفة أم أن هناك أباً آخر لها، وما علاقة هذه الأبوة بالأبناء؟... ثم هل ما كتب عن مارون، هو رسم حقيقي لهذا القديس، أم هناك إضافات أخرى؟.. وما دور يوحنا بمارون، في بعث المارونية أو في تأسيسها على الأدق؟ نهج السؤال، يجد جوابه في العودة إلى مسألتين عند سركيس أبو زيد:
الأول: قراءة الوثائق التاريخية الأصلية، من معينها الأول، قبل أن تدخل فيها التأويلات، الثانية: تفكيك عناصر المعطى التاريخي، وفق منهج متحرك... تكمن قيمة هذه الدراسة التي جمعها المؤلف "أبو زيد" في هذا الكتاب أنها كتبت على فترات في الحروب الأهلية اللبنانية، ولا تزال صالحة بعد إعلان "الشعب اللبناني" حالة "السلم الأهلي الهش". كما تكمن القيمة العلمية، في أنها تخترق السائد من الكلام اللاعلمي، حول الجماعات اللبنانية، والتي تتناغم ومتطلبات النظام السياسي القائم، الذي يحتاج دائماً إلى بدلة التعدد، وإعادة التأسيس لها، عبر "صفقات دموية" موسمية، تستعاد فيها صورة الجماعات البشعة بكل ما فيها من "لا تاريخية ولا علمية".
في هذا الكتاب دعوة مبطنة إلى الكتّاب والباحثين لإعادة قراءة المجموعات والأقليات، على أنها كتل تاريخية، قابلة للتفكيك إلى عناصرها الذاتية والاجتماعية، لتستقيم النظرة إلى التاريخ.
