"تهالك على السرير الحديدي، فغاص في غلالة شاحبة منبعثة من السهّارة... فارق ذهنه الغرفة، مخلفاً جسداً هامداً، تجمعت كل حياة في أصابعه السمراء، التي تحاصر لفافة تبغ رخيص خش كله أعواد، يسحب منها أنفاسها ينفها سعالاً. النار تقاوم "أعواد التبغ"... الذهن بعيد تفاصيل اللقاء الإذاعي مع صديقه الصحفي... لقد كلفه هذا اللقاء عشاء كاملاً... ورغم أن العشاء لم يكن فاخراً، فقد استدان "محمود عيسى" ليدعو صديقه إلى مطعم متواضع وسط العاصمة، وانزوى به في ركن هادئ ليسمعه قصائده الجديدة، ولا يزال إلى الآن ينتظر ثمن القصيدة التي نشرها في إحدى الجرائد الأسبوعية ليسدّ دينه. النار تتثاءب وتتمطى فوق "أعواد التبغ"... الأصابع تتحرك من حين إلى حين لتنفض رماداً لا يقع في المنفضة... الذهن يفرق تفاصيل اللقاء، ويتلذذ به كرغيف أخرج لتوّه من التنور... فجأة انتصب واقفاً، امتص بشراهة نفساً جديداً من لفافته فخرج من بين شفتيه خيط دخان يرقص زهواً: لقد كنت نجماً متألقاً، هذه الليلة، في سماء الإذاعة، غصباً عن كل "الأصدقاء"... ليت هنداً سمعت صوتي هذا المساء... وليتني استطعت أن أخبر ليلى وسعاد وبثينة... ولكنه كان لقاءً مباشراً، ولم أكن متأكداً من إجرائه حتى آخر لحظة. اغتبط، وزهت تجاعيد جبينه، الحزينة دائماً، اهتزت شفتاه الزرقاوات وانفرجت عن أسنات صفراء. "أين هي؟ أين الرسالة التي فتحتها، ثم طويتها على عجل، قبل دخولي الإذاعة؟ هل قرأتها أم لا؟ الرسالة التي استلمتها اليوم من الجريدة!... ليتها تكون من هند"...
