عندما نقرأ (من وراء البحر) نعرف معنى أن تكون شاعراً، بما يعنيه من رهافة الحس ويقظة الشعور وقوة الحدس ورحابة الخيال. نفس هذه القواعد يرتكز عليها (أحمد محمد المعتوق) في بناء تجربته وتكوين شاعريته حتى تختمر وتنضج وتكتمل، وشاعر يعتبر "أن الشعر الرفيع لا يكشف عن زينته ويبدي فتنته ويسفر عن جماله وسحره إلا لمن حللت لهم شريعة الفن ذلك. وشريعة الفن قائمة في طبيعتها على رهافة الحس وتألق الشعور وتوهج الفكر والقدرة على جعل الروح تعانق الروح (...) ... هكذا يرى الشاعر والأديب السعودي أحمد محمد المعتوق الشعر وأهله، وعلى وقعه يخط حروف ديوانه – من وراء البحر – وقد حرص على إقامة خطاب شعري متوهج عبر سلسلة من صيغات أسلوبية تنتظم تحت سقف لغوي واحد متجانس ومتقارب في ملفوظاته وبناه اللغوية وصوره الشعرية في قصيدته المعنونة (العادية) نقرأ له:
"نوافذ القرية نام فوقها الغروب / والنجوم كالكرات دحرجت / على سفوح غيمة، ترنحت ، وذابت النجوم! / وطائر الواق يسامر الليل على الجدار / وأنت في العراء سادر / تغيب في مجاهل السكون (...) ".
محتويات الكتاب: مقدمة (تجربة الشعر) إضاءة على تجربة أحمد محمد المعتوق، يلي ذلك (34) قصيدة في الشعر العربي الحديث نذكر من العناوين: "العراق" ، "النورس الأخضر" ، "هاتف من وراء البحر" ، "ما وراء البرزخ" (...) الخ.
" طلت كل أبراج المدائن، نبتت خلف جدار الصمت للزهو مآذن، وحكاياه تطايرن مع الريحِ شرارا، فأرقت الجسد المتعب في كأس وعود، وجوار البيت أضحى قبباً، والناس في غمرةِ حلـمي يتناجون، وأصطادُ على أسطح مرآتي، شحاريرَ من الضوء، عقدت العزمَ في ليلتي البكر، على أن أتبارى، أنا والبرق على قارعةِ الدرب يقـيناً، يخطف الأعين، والناس ـ كأن لا خبر كان ـ سكارى، لم أكن أعلمُ كيف انبثـق النبعُ صراحاً، وسرى مثل حريق، وري الزند جناح أشقر اللون ، ولكن، قارب القوس سراعاً ثم طارا"
