هذا الكتاب هو استعادة تاريخية لسيرة الاحتلال. سيعرض فيه الباحث على مساحة ثمانية فصول وقائع الحروب الإسرائيلية على لبنان والتحولات التي طرأت على مفاهيم ونظريات الأمن منذ نشوء الحزام الأمني في العام 1976 امتداداً إلى العام 2001 مروراً بالمحطة الكبرى التي قضت برحيل الاحتلال في الخامس والعشرين من أيار (مايو) 2000. لقد أثار الباحث النظر في المنطق الداخلي للعقل السياسي الإسرائيلي. فكانت قراءته لمعطياته أدنى إلى استقرائه وتفكيكه منها إلى بسطه على نحو العرض العام. وقصده من هذا، استنتاج الأطروحة التي خلصت إليها عقود كاملة من الاختبارات الأمنية والحروب والاحتلالات المتعاقبة. وسيتبين للقارئ أن باب الدخول إلى فقه الأطروحة الإسرائيلية بعد عقود من المكوث الشاق داخل الجيو-بوليتيكا اللبنانية، يبدأ من حقيقة أن نظرية الاحتلال بلغت ذروة صعودها لتعود فتأخذ مسارها الهابط مع المثال اللبناني الأخير. سيمضي هذا الكتاب في سيرة الاحتلال من أولها. ولسوف يجد القارئ أنها سيرة لم تنته بنهاية الجدار الطيب.. هي لن تنتهي في زمن منظور.
لم يكن السادس والعشرون من كانون الثاني/يناير 1976، يوماً عارضاً في تاريخ لبنان. في هذا اليوم ستعلن إسرائيل قيام "الجدار الطيب". فقد كان ثمة شغف إسرائيلي، بأن من الممكن حمل لبنان على علاقة حسن جوار تتطور مع الزمن إلى صلة قربى. يومذاك حظي "الجدار الطيب" بفلسفة سياسية لخصها شمعون بيريز بقوله "إن الأسلوب السليم للسيطرة هو عدم السيطرة على مناطق، بل إقامة شبكة علاقات طيبة بالأهالي في لبنان". وبعد حوالي ربع قرن من الزمن انهار "الجدار الطيب" على وقع انتصارات المقاومة واندحار جيش الاحتلال الإسرائيلي.
في هذا الكتاب يقوم الباحث محمود حيدر باستعادة سيرة الاحتلال والحروب الإسرائيلية على لبنان والتحولات التي طرأت على مفاهيم ونظريات الأمن في إسرائيل، مستعرضاً عقود كاملة من الاختبارات الأمنية التي أفضت إلى خلاصات تراجيدية في العقل الإسرائيلي اعتبرت أن حروب التدخل في لبنان هي "حروب رجال بلا أمل".
