شاعر روماني قديم، تقرأه فتشعر أنه معاصر، وإن مضى على رحيله ما يقارب ألفي سنة، تلك روعة الشعر العظيم وتفرده، إنه يتحدى الزمن ويستعصي على الموت والزوال، والحب موضوعه الأثير، في الجد والعبث، في الملحمة الصاخبة والمرثاة الوجدانية الشجية.
إنه بوبليوس أوفيديوس ناسو، وهو معروف بإسم (أوفيد) وطفى. ولد في أسرة ميسورة سنة 34 قبل الميلاد وتوفي سنة 17 ميلادية، وبعض المراجع تسير إلى أن وفاته كانت سنة 18 م . لا نعرف إلا القليل من حياته. ولولا تلك اللمحات المنثورة في شعره، ما وصلنا عنه نبأ ذو شأن يذكر. مسقط رأسه في سولمو (سولمونا، اليوم) هي أبروتسي على شاطئ الأدرياتيكي، وهي مدينة صغيرة وجميلة تقع على مسافة 90 ميلاً (140كم) شرقي روما. والشاعر يتحدث عنها وعن جمالها بلهفة حميمة تذكرنا بصورة الأندلس في الشعر العربي.
تنتمي أسرة الشاعر إلى طبقة الفرسان، وهي الطبقة الوسطى بين عامة الناس ومجلس الشيوخ. كانت دراسة البلاغة والقانون طموح الشباب الروماني، أملاً في أن يغدو واحدهم متألقاً في الخطابة والقضاء. وفي روما درس أوفيد البلاغة تحت إشراف أساتذة كبار من بينهم أوريليوس فوسكوس ويروكيوس لاترو، ثم أكمل تعليمه في أثينا حيث أعد نفسه أن يكون شاعراً. لكنه عمل في روما قاضياً يفصل بين قضايا الوراثة والوصاية، وفي قضايا الإجرام أحياناً. لكنه سرعان ما تخلى عن الحياة العامة ومشكلاتها ليتفرغ للشعر وعالمه الرحب. ذلك قدر أوفيد في أن يكون شاعراً كبيراً، يقف في الصدارة بين شعراء جيله.
