هذا الكتاب واحد من المصادر المهمة في الجغرافيا العربية خلال القرن الرابع الهجري. وضعه مؤلفه للعزيز بالله الفاطمي المعروف بشغفه اللافت بالكتب وتقريبه للمؤلفين والعلماء. وقد شهد بأصالة هذا الكتاب وجدة مادته العديد من المؤرخين العرب والمستشرقين الذين درسوا تراثنا العربي في القرن الماضي. قام الباحث تيسير خلف بإعادة جمع (الكتاب العزيزي) من جديد بعد أن فقد منذ نهاية القرن الثامن الهجري، من جميع المصادر العربية المتوفرة، بما في ذلك مخطوطة الأمبروزيانا التي ضمت وصفاً نادراً لدمشق وبيت المقدس، وذكر لولاة مصر. ويعتقد الباحث أن الكتاب أحرق في نهاية العصر المملوكي نتيجة تراجع الحركة الفكرية والمعرفية وسيطرة نمط محدد من التفكير حاول أن يقصي ويرجم كل ما هو مخالف. ولعل أهميته الكبرى تنبع من كونه أحد المصادر المبكرة والغنية من شاهد عيان، عن أحوال بلاد الشام والثغور الشمالية، التي سقطت بيد البيزنطيين نهائياً أثناء حياة المؤلف، وهي فترة قلقة لا تذكر مصادر التاريخ والجغرافيا الكثير عن تفاصيل الحياة الاجتماعية والعقائد الدينية التي كانت سائدة فيها. ولذلك يبدو هذا الكتاب، أو على الأقل ما وصلنا منه، مرجعاً مهماً لأي باحث في التاريخ العربي الإسلامي خلال الفترة التي سبقت تأسيس ممالك صليبية للفرنجة في بلادنا.
