وذلك دون ملل أو صعوبة، فالكتاب عبر فصوله الأربعة الأول يطرح سؤالاً هاماً وهو كيف يمكننا اليوم دراسة علم النفس، بأي منهج وبأي أسلوب؟ وما هو موضوع دراستنا في هذه الحالة؟ وعن طريق الإجابة على هذا السؤال، يسعى المؤلف إلى عرض أهم نقاط التحول في تاريخ علم النفس فيعرض لماهية الأزمة التي تتردد بين التقليديين من جهة والمحدثين من جهة أخرى، وبينهما وبين أنصار الخط الوسط على السواء.
أما في فصوله الثلاثة اللاحقة فيشرع المؤلف المقصود بالسلوك التناسلي، وعقدة الخصاء، والعمليات العقلية وأنواعها، ثم بعد ذلك ينتقل إلى الأمراض النفسية وأساليب علاجها، وفي الفصلين الأخيرين في فصول الكتاب التسعة يورد محاضرة ألقاها فرويد حول المرأة؟ ونظرة مختصرة لمذهب فرويد في علم النفس.
