ربما كان دريد لحام بسيطاً في مظهره وهيئته، لكنه كان العملاق الأكثر تأثيراً، عبر ما يزيد على ثلاثين عاماً، في الأداء الكوميدي. فهو فيلسوف السخرية وملك الحزن ومشعل التنوير في "مدرسة الضحك"، التي تخرج منها عباقرة الكوميديا العربية. وقد استطاع دريد لحام، بخفة دمه، أن يصل بفنه الراقي إلى البسطاء عبر إيقاع الكوميديا، واستطاع بموهبته الفطرية أن يعالج الألم بالضحك، كما استطاع دريد لحام، الفنان "الضاحك الباكي" أن يسرق الضحك من أعماق الجماهير، وأن يجعل الدموع تسيل من عيونهم. وظل دريد يضحك الناس بالقوة، وفي زمن صار فيه الضحك عملة نادرة مع نهاية القرن الماضي بكوارثه وأزمانه، وحلول الألفية الثالثة، وظل دريد لحام يضحك المشاهد العربي، حينما كانت حياته حزناً وهماً وألماً، حتى بات رائد الكوميديا، في العالم العربي فحسب، بل في مختلف أصقاع الأرض، أخطر من أي شخصية أخرى عرفتها الجماهير العربية.
وقد كان المؤلف في سرد سيرة حياة هذا الفنان مؤرخاً أميناً وصادقاً، كما كان في الوقت نفسه قلماً مستجيباً لمتطلبات القارئ العربي الذي كان، ولايزال، شأنه في ذلك شأن المكتبة العربية، بأمسى الحاجة إلى هذا النوع من الكتب الثرية بمعلوماتها والغنية بوقائعها التي لا يعرفها إلا قلائل.
