يشوب حالة التدوين التاريخي في العراق كثير من الغموض بسبب ما أصابه من إغفال أو قلة معرفة من لدن المؤرخين الذين كتبوا عن هذه الحالة لما بعد الإحتلال المغولي لبغداد في منتصف القرن الثالث عشر.
والحال أنّ هذه الحقبة الطويلة التي امتدّت لقرون عديدة، لم تكن خالية من المؤرخين العراقيين، ولكن كثيراً منهم قد ترك العراق وآثر الإستقرار في بلاد الشام ومصر والحجاز وربما وصل المقام ببعضهم إلى اليمن، تجنباً للظروف القاسية التي عانى منها المؤرخون والعلماء في مختلف مجالات المعرفة، على يد القوى الأجنبية التي وطأت هذه البلاد بحدّ السيف.
كان غياث الدين البغدادي، المعروف بالغياثي أحد أولئك المؤرخين الذي رحل إلى بلاد الشام في عهد القرة قوينلو وكتب من هناك عمّا كان يجري بأرض العراق، وكانت كتاباته صورة دقيقة لما كان عليه وضع المؤرخ البعيد عن وطنه، الملتاع لما كان يعانيه.
لم تكن القرون التالية بعيدة عن ولادة مؤرخين عراقيين، ولكن قسماً من هؤلاء لم ينالوا نصيبهم من الشهرة، ولم تدرس مؤلفاتهم، لبيان مدى مساهمتها في حركة التدوين التاريخي، فالغرابي في القرن السابع عشر، وآل السويدي في القرن الثامن عشر، قد تركوا عدة مساهمات تاريخية قيمة.
وشهد القرن التاسع عشر من يعنى بكتابة التاريخ، وكان ذلك على يد أبي الثناء الألوسي، صاحب المؤلفات الفقهية، ولكننا نجد في ثنايا مؤلفاته العديدة الكثير من المعلومات التاريخية القيمة، التي أفادت الفكر التاريخي وتدوين الأحداث التاريخية في العراق.
وفي القرن العشرين، لمع من المؤرخين عدد كبير ممن رفدوا حركة التدوين التاريخي في العراق، في العصر الحديث، ومنهم عباس العزاوي، وجعفر الشيخ باقر آل محبوبة، وقد تناول مؤلفنا هذه الشخصيات جميعاً، في دراسات علمية موضوعية، ومن الله التوفيق.
