يدرّس الأدب العربي المعاصر ونظرية الترجمة في جامعة إدنبره (سكوتلندا).
ولد في رام الله سنة 1937.
تلقّى دراساته العليا في الأدب الإنكليزي في جامعة كاليفورنيا، ويركز نشاطه العلمي على الأبحاث المتعلقة بالأدب والتراث الشعبي الفلسطيني والترجمة.
Book Description
كان من الطبيعي أن تصدر هذه الطبعة العربية لكتاب Again: Palestinian Arab Folktales Speak, Bird, Speak فحكاياته الخمس الأربعون تنتمي إلى الثقافة الشعبية الفلسطينية، وهي جزء من الثقافة العربية وتقاليد القصص الشعبي العربي. وكان هم المؤلفان: "إبراهيم مهوى" و"شريف كناعنه"، الأكبر في إصدار هذه الطبعة جعل الحكايات والثقافة التي نشأت فيها واللغة (اللهجة الدارجة الفلسطينية) التي رويت بها في متناول القراء العرب، كي يقاربوا بين الثقافة التي نشأوا فيها والثقافة الشعبية الفلسطينية. إن المعلومات الاثنوغرافية المتضمنة في الحواشي عن الحياة الشعبية الفلسطينية من شأنها أن توضح مدى تكامل الثقافة الفلسطينية مع الثقافة العربية من جهة، ومدى خصوصيتها وارتباطها العضوي بالارض وبالحيز الجغرافي الذي نشأت فيه من جهة أخرى.
يضم هذا الكتاب خمس وأربعين حكاية (خرافية) من مئتي حكاية روى معظمها نساء في جميع أنحاء فلسطين (الجليل والضفة الغربية وغزة). وقد اخترناها باعتبارها الحكايات الأكثر رواجاً بين أبناء الشعب الفلسطيني ولقيمتها الفنية (جمالياتها وحسن أدائها)، ولما تبرزه من ملامح عن الثقافة الشعبية في فلسطين. وكان الداعي الأساسي إلى وضع هذا الكتاب لا الحفاظ على فن قصصي نسائي كان واسع الانتشار عندما كان الشعب الفلسطيني يمارس ثقافته على كامل أرضه فحسب، بل أيضاً كي نعرض صورة علمية وموضوعية للثقافة العربية النابعة من أرض فلسطين ومن تراثها الإنساني الذي تضرب جذوره في عروق التاريخ. ولإبراز خصوصية هذه الثقافة كان علينا أن نضع الحكايات باللغة العربية الدارجة التي رويت بها، وأن نرفقها بدراسة معمقة على عدة مستويات تبرز الملامح الوطنية لهذه الثقافة، وفي الوقت ذاته تربطها بمحيطها العربي وبالثقافة الإنسانية على صعيد العالم باكمله.
