هذا الكتاب محاولة لتوجيه الأنظار إلى هذا الموضوع وإتخاذه قيمة في حد ذاتها ينبغي معالجتها كما تعالج أي قيمة إنسانية أخرى سواء كانت تتعلق بالحق أو الخير أو الجمال.
إن الإنسان نفسه يسعى إلى إقرار الحق وإلى طلب الخير وتذوق الجمال وفي نفس الوقت لديه شعور خفي وحاجة إلى أن يحب وأن يكون محبوباً، لقد جرب الإنسان وسائل متعددة في الوصول إلى الحب، كما قد جرب طرق متعددة للوصول إلى الحق والخير والجمال، وكما كان في إمكان الإنسان إصدار أحكام متفاوتة عن هذه القيم فإن الإنسان نفسه قادر أن يصدر أحكامه على تجربته العاطفية الإنسانية ويعطيها قيمة معينة.
ولما كان من الإمكان وضع قواعد لهداية الفكر حتى يتم الوصول إلى الحكم الصادق، ووضع قواعد أخلاقية معينة لهداية السلوك الإنساني حتى يتصف الإنسان بالأخلاقية، كذلك أمكن تحديد قواعد معينة يتبعها الإنسان لتهذيب ذوقه حتى يتخذ عمله صبغة جمالية معينة، فإن الحب هو الآخر يمكن أن تحدد له بعض الطرق التي تقود إلى إنعقاده وتكون سبباً في إحداثه.
هذه الدراسة تعتبر مساهمة في تحديد معالم الطريق وليس حلاً لتلك المشاكل وإنما توضيح وإستبصار مما يجعلها عرضة للخطأ والصواب، الإستحسان والإستهجان، القبول والرفض.
