نظم مركز دراسات الوحدة العربية بالاشتراك مع الاتحاد العام للأدباء والكتاب العرب ونقابة المعلمين في الجمهورية العراقية ندوة فكرية حول دور الأدب في نشر الوعي القومي والدعوة إلى الوحدة العربية، ضمن سلسلة من الندوات ينظمها مركز دراسات الوحدة العربية ضمن منهاجه الثقافي في عدد من الأقطار العربية. وقد تألفت لجنة تحضيرية من الدكتور سعدون حمادي والدكتور مسارع الراوي والأستاذ شفيق الكمالي والدكتور نوري القيسي والدكتور عصام عبد علي، وقامت بوضع منهج الندوة واقتراح المواضيع وتكليف الباحثين، وتحديد أسماء المشاركين، وإنجاز كل ما يتطلبه عقد الندوة من أعمال تتعلق بالمحتوى أو تتعلق بالإجراءات.
وقد عقدت الندوة خلال يومي 28 و29 نيسان/أبريل 1980 في مقر نقابة المعلمين العراقيين في بغداد، وامتدت على أربعة اجتماعات خلال اليومين.
ولعل أهم ما يمكن أن تظهره هذه الندوة من أفكار هو أنها توضح، بما لا يقبل الالتباس، أن الشعور القومي عند العرب يغوص في أعماق تاريخهم. فهو يعود إلى الجاهلية، وليس انعكاساً لاحتكاك العرب بالغرب، الذي تكونت قومياته حديثاً، كما يقول بعض الذين يرغبون بتفسير كل شيء من منظار غربي.
كما تُظهر مواد هذه الندوة أيضاً أن روح المقاومة كانت دائماً موجودة عن العرب. فأوقات الأزمات لم تتسم بالاستسلام واليأس، بل صاحبتها الدعوة للنهوض والوقوف بوجه الأخطار. أما إذا تساءل أحد عن الهدف النهائي لمثل هذا النوع من النشاط، فالجواب لن يكون غير استنهاض همة الأدباء لزيادة مساهمتهم في بث الشعور القومي والدعوة لتوحيد الأمة، لما للأدب، وخاصة الشعر، من دور مؤثر في تكوين مشاعر العرب الذين توارثوا هذه الصفحة منذ أقدم العصور. إنها دعوة للقادرين على أن يعملوا أكثر وأن يساهموا أكثر في مقاومة الواقع وبناء ما يجب أن يكون عليه.
