إن هذا الكتاب، "تاريخ سلاجقة الشام ما بين 463- 549/ 1070- 1154 زمن الحروب الصليبية الأولى"، يتناول حكم التركمان والسلاجقة في النصف الثاني من القرن الخامس الهجري / الحادي عشر الميلادي الذين سيطروا على سوريا وفلسطين وشرقي الأردن وأجزاء من لبنان الحالية بالإضافة إلى أجزاء من الأناضول مشكلين بذلك أحد فروع السلطنة السلجوقية وقاعدتها الأساسية إيران.
وتكمن أهمية حكمهم إلى أنهم أدخلوا نظام الحكم التركي إلى هذه المناطق مما أثر في كل الأسر السياسية الحاكمة بعدهم في تلك المناطق، مثل الأراتقة والزنكيين والأيوبيين والمماليك، مما مهد للعثمانيين أيضاً حكم المنطقة وتركنة الحكم.
نضيف إلى ذلك أهمية أخرى وهي أنهم حلو محل الحكم الفاطمي للشام بإرادته وشخصيته المختلفة الشعبية، ثم قدوم الصليبيين إلى المشرق في أواخر القرن الخامس / الحادي عشر وصراعهم مع السلاجقة طوال فترة حكمهم مما أضفى بعداً سياسي على هذا التاريخ الذي لم يدقق فيه الباحثون بالشكل الكافي.
إن الغزو السلجوقي التركماني لمنطقة الشرق الأوسط من أوزبكستان وأفغانستان الحاليتين في الشرق إلى تركيا وسوريا في الغرب كان بمثابة إكتساح بشري لهجرات عائلية استمر لعدة قرون آتياً من منغوليا وواصلاً غرباً إلى البحر المتوسط.
