فرنان بروديل (24 أغسطس 1902 - 27 نوفمبر 1985) مؤرخ فرنسي وزعيم من زعماء مدرسة أنال في التاريخ. ركزت دراساته على ثلاثة مشاريع رئيسية، تمثل كل منها عدة عقود من الدراسة المكثفة: البحر الأبيض المتوسط (1923-1949 ومن ثم 1949-1966) والحضارة والرأسمالية (1955-1979) والهوية الفرنسية غير المكتمل (1970-1985). من أقواله: -لا يمكن للمؤرخ أن يكون على قدم المساواة إلا مع تاريخ بلده, فهو يفهم بشكل يكاد يكون غريزيا تطوراته المفاجئة وتحولاته, تعقيداته وجوانب أصالته وضعفه, ومهما كانت ثقافة المؤرخ عظيمة, فإنه لا يمكنه التمتع بهذه الميزة عندما يرحل إلى ساحة أخرى-

قد لا يكون هذا الكتاب - الصغير بحجمه والغني بمضمونه بحاجة إلى تعريف فالمؤلف "فرينان بروديل"، واحد من أركان علم التاريخ العلمي في القرن العشرين وكتابه الموسوعي عن البحر الأبيض المتوسط في أواخر العصر الوسيط صار نقطة إنطلاق لمدرسة في فهم مشكلات التاريخ ومعالجتها تعرف اليوم بإسم "مدرسة الحوليات" لتجمعها حول "الحوليات" التي هي مجلة بروديل.
ويجد القارئ في هذه الخلاصة الصغيرة محاولة للإحاطة بالمسائل التي يطرحها علينا هذا البحر ومنها تاريخه، وما يحتوي عليه من كنوز حيوانية ونباتية وكلمة عن الحضارات التي تعاقبت عليه وشكلت ما تسميه اليوم حضارة البحر الأبيض المتوسط التي جمعت في فسخة واحدة وخلاصة واحدة تراث الإنسانية ونشرته على العالم ومنها الحضارة الأغريقية والحضارتين الإسلامية والمسيحية...
