اهتم ابن عربي بدراسة الحياة الروحية عند العباد اهتماماً خاصاً لذلك نرى أنه لبلوغ الكمال عن طريق التصوف، على الإنسان أن يخلص نفسه من كل الأمور التي تتعلق بالدنيا، وأن يسعى إلى الله عن طريق الذكر وحده، وعلى المريد أن يبدأ بحياة الخلوة مع وجود شيخ مرشد، لأن المرشد هو بمثابة الطبيب الذي يعلم المريد ويربيه، ويدله على الطريق، ومن الشروط الأساسية للدخول في الحياة الصوفية طاعة الشيخ، وامتثال أمره، والتحبب إليه والتزام الأدب معه، وإذا كانت الغاية من الحياة الصوفية هي تفريغ القلب من ما سوى الله، ابتغاء التقرب إليه فمن الواضح أنه لا يكفر المريد للوصول إلى هذه الغاية أن يكتم شهواته، ويقمع أهوائه، دون أن يتأصل جرثومة هذه الشهوات، وهي حب الذات وخير وسيلة لقمع الهوى هي الطاعة، الغير مشروطة، من أجل الوصول إلى الكمال الذي يسعى إليه المريد عن طريق العفة والزهد، والإيثار والرحمة، إنه الطريق إلى معرفة الله وطاعته.
