دفعني إلى وضع هذا الكتاب "الرسم واللون" ما أراه من نهضة سريعة وتطور شامل لفن الرسم، وما أشعر به من تعطش الكثير من أبناء جيلنا العربي الناهض إلى مؤلفات عربية تبحث في فروع الرسم المختلفة.
وليس الغرض منه تكوين فنانين موهوبين أو أعداد طائفة من الطلاب أعداداً فنياً بالمعنى المألوف، ولكن الغاية المرجوَّة منه مزاولة بعض فروع هذا الفن الجميل طبقاً لميولهم وإستعداداتهم.
وقد تعمدت أن أجعل مواضيعه سهلة يسيرة بعيدة كل البعد عن القواعد الصعبة والطرق المعقدة، وبدأت به بأكثر ما يمكنني من السهولة وقسمت فصوله المختلفة بشكل يسهل على الطالب معالجته، كما أنني راعيت البساطة المتناهية في رسم وتخطيط الأشكال واللوحات المختلفة حتى لا أحمِّل الطالب عناء الشرح الطويل، أما ما ورد في هذا الكتاب من النظريات العلمية البحتة فقد استقيته من مؤلفات عديدة ومراجع مختلفة.
وقد حرضت على إنتفاء موضوعاته من بيئة الطالب ومن مواقع حياته اليومية، إذ لا خير في تفكير ينفصل عن الحياة ولا في توجيه لا يتصل بواقعها، وتوخيت أن يضم الكتاب أكبر عدد ممكن من اللوحات الزاخرة بالأمثلة والتمارين للإطلاع عليها والإستزادة منها.
