لقد جمع الشيخ القاشاني "730هـ" في هذا المصنف المصطلحات الصوفية، وقام بترتيبها، وتنسيقها، وبوب كل حرف لوحده وجعله باباً مستقلاً، وعددها سبعة وعشرين باباً، وكان يتناول كل مصطلح بالشرح والتفسير من القرآن الكريم والسنة النبوية الشريفة.
والشيء الذي لا شك فيه، أن هناك عدداً آخر من المصطلحات لم يوردها القاشاني بل حاول أ، يضع معظمها، ونستدل من ذلك أن القاشاني له اليد الطولى في ميدان تأمل التراث الصوفي، ولا نبالغ إذا قلنا أنه يعد مدرسة صوفية بحد ذاته.
وقسم القاشاني كتابه إلى قسمين: القسم الأول: أورد فيه سبعة وعشرين باباً على عدد حروف الأبجدية.
وخصص كل باب بحرف معين من هذه الحروف. القسم الثاني: قان بتقسيمه إلى عشرة أقسام مبتدأ من قسم البدايات إلى قسم النهايات.
