يجمع علماء النفس في تعريفهم لعلم النفس الإجتماعي على أنه هو العلم الذي يدرس سلوك الفرد كما يظهر في المواقف الإجتماعية المختلفة، أي أن الموضوع الذي يهتم هذا العلم بدراسته هو الدراسة العلمية للسلوك الذي يقوم به الفرد تحت تأثير المنبهات الإجتماعية المختلفة والعلاقات التي تجمع بين هذه المنبهات.
وتعنى هذه الدراسة العلمية وتلك الطريقة المنظمة للمعرفة وتعتمد هذه الطريقة على المنهج التجريبي، والمنهج التجريبي هو ذلك المنهج الذي يعتمد على الملاحقة Observation ويعتمد على إفتراض الفروض Hypotheses وإجراء التجارب والقياس Easement.
