روائي تركي فاز بجائزة نوبل للأداب، لعام 2006.
من مواليد إسطنبول في 7 يونيو عام 1952 وهو ينتمي لأسرة تركية مثقفة.
درس العمارة والصحافة قبل أن يتجه الي الأدب والكتابة كما يعد أحد أهم الكتاب المعاصرين في تركيا وترجمت اعماله الي 34 لغة حتي الآن، ويقرأه الناس في أكثر من 100 دولة.
في فبراير 2003 صرح باموق لمجلة سويسرية بأن "مليون أرمني و30 ألف كردي قتلوا على هذه الأرض، لكن لا أحد غيري يجرؤ على قول ذلك".
تمت ملاحقته قضائيا أمام القضاء التركي بسبب "إهانة الهوية التركية"،ولشخصية شبه مقدسة عند الأتراك وهي شخصية (مصطفى كمال أتاتورك) وهما جريمتين يعاقب عليهما القانون بحسب الفقرة 301, وقد عفى من الملاحقة القضائية أخيرا في نهاية 2006.
اختير كعضو في لجنة تحكيم مهرجان كان السينمائي لعام 2007.

لوحة ملحمية عن الحياة السياسية والاقتصادية، الاجتماعية والثقافية في تركيا القرن العشرين، تسايرها في منعطفاتها الثلاثة الكبرى: انهيار الإمبراطورية العثمانية (1905) وفاة أتاتورك (1938) الفوضى والانقلابات العسكرية في السبعينات من هذا القرن، ولكن كما عاشها الشعب التركي في أجياله المتعاقبة (عائلة جودت بيك) وحيث كل جيل يمثل منعطفاً وكل منعطف يكون رجالاته وعقلياتهم.
الروائي (مواليد 1957) شاب أستاذ زائر في جامعة برينسون وحائز على أعلى جائزة أدبية في تركيا (جائزة الروائي أورهان كمال). والرواية واحدة من النماذج الكلاسيكية النادرة الناجحة للرواية الشاملة في القرن العشرين، من مستوى روايات ستندال، ونولستوي اللذين سار أورهان باموق على دربهما، كما يقول هو نفسه ويضيف أنه آخذ بنظريات الفيلسوف الهنغاري لوكاتش في الواقعية النقدية.
ولو اكتملت ثلاثية (العصاة) للمرحوم صدقي إسماعيل لشكلت هي أيضاً لوحة ملحمية كاملة عن التحولات الكبرى وتعاقب الأجيال في سوريا العربية. ويرى القارئ أن ثمة شبهاً كبيراً بين تطور الجمهورية التركية وتطور أغلب جمهوريات العالم الثالث.
