تتقاطع سيرة الراوي مع التاريخ في رواية "جودت بيك وأبناؤه" وتدخل في علاقات متواشجة تبرز التداخل بين الخاص والعام، وتعكس تأثير اللحظة التاريخية في الأفراد، واللحظة التاريخية التي تقاربها الرواية، وترصد انعكاساتها على الأفراد والشعوب، تنتمي إلى تاريخ تركيا في الشرق في العصر الحديث، وبالتحديد القرن العشرين، حيث تشكل الرواية بحق لوحة بانورامية عن حياة مفعمة بالأحداث من الناحية السياسية والإجتماعية والثقافية وتمتد على ثلاثة تواريخ تشكل منعطفاً هاماً في تاريخ تركيا الحديث وهي: انهيار الأمبراطورية العثمانية (1905) وفاة أتاتورك (1938)، الفوضى والإنقلابات العسكرية في السبعينيات من القرن العشرين، ولكن كما عاشها الشعب التركي في أجياله المتعاقبة (عائلة جودت بيك) حيث كل جيل هو شريحة اجتماعية يمثل رجالها عقلية أو ذهنية مستبدة تختلف وتفترق مع التي تليها. من هنا نعرف أنها قصة ثلاثة أجيال من نفس العائلة ، كل جيل يعيش ثقافته واهتماماته، وتبدأ بـ " جودت بيك" رجل أعمال ثري وسياسي مخضرم متزوج من ابنة الباشا ولديه إبنان (عثمان ورفيق) أو رفيق هو الجيل الثاني في الرواية يتمتع بشخصية متميزة في العائلة مرح وعاطفي، يعيش في شقة مستقلة، بينما أخيه عثمان يسلك طريق والده فيترأس الأعمال والشركات. تتوالى الأحداث في الرواية، لتشكل في حركيتها وفي شخوصها نوعاً من التأريخ الإجتماعي لمجتمع معين. ولعل ما أورده (باموق ) من شخصيات حقيقية وأخرى تاريخية وفي أماكن معروفة يمنح الرواية كثيراً من الصدقية بتقديمها مادة "تاريخية- اجتماعية" متنوعة شاءها صاحبها غاية فاتخذ لها الرواية وسيلة، والغاية هنا تبرر الوسيلة...
يضم هذا الكتاب الترجمة الكاملة لرواية الكاتب التركي أورهان باموق الحائز على جائزة نوبل في الأدب عام 2006م.
