هل يكتسب النمو المعرفي طابعاً ثقافياً؟ لا بد للإجابة على هذا السؤال من الانطلاق من تحليل التحديدات المتعلّقة بمفهوم الثقافة. لا شك في أن هذه التحديدات تسمح بالتمييز ما بين مدرستين للأبحاث في مجال علم النفس عبر الثقافي المعاصر: علم النفس الثقافي وعلم النفس عبر الثقافي المقارن. ومهما أظهرت هاتان المدرستان من اختلافات وتباينات إلاّ أن فرادتهما تكمن في الاهتمام الذي يوليه كل منهما بسياقات التطور البشري وبالتفاعلات القائمة بين هذه السياقات من جهة والفرد من جهة ثانية. واستناداً إلى ما تقدم، يتم دراسة نموذجين مرتبطين بهذه السياقات ألا وهما النموذج البيئي-الثقافي ونموذج كوات النمو. وفي النهاية، تعرض سلسلة من الأبحاث التي أجريت مؤخراً حول ميادين ثلاثة من المعارف (المكان، الزمان، علم الفلك) بغية اعتماد مقاربة نقديّة لهذين النموذجين وإبانتها بالأمثلة والشروح. ويخلص إلى القول إلى أن الإجابة على السؤال المطروح في عنوان الكتاب الفرعي لا يمكن إلاّ أن تتأتى عن مسألة "التعقيد" أي عن المنحى المؤيد للتعايش المشترك بين مفهومين نقيضين. وبالتالي، يكتسبُ علم النفس وما يقترحه من مفهوم النفس البشرية ومفهوم تطورها، وقد ذاع صيت هذه المفاهيم على نحو كبير في مجتمعاتنا، الطابع الثقافي إلاّ أنها تهدف في الوقت عينه وتسعى إلى الشمولية والكونية.
