كان من عادة "تشي" في حياته كمحارب، أن يدون ملاحظاته اليومية بكل عناية واهتمام، وخلال المسيرات الطويلة، في الأراضي الوعرة الصعبة، وفي الغابات الرطبة، وعندما كانت قافلة الرجال، وقد ناءت ظهورهم بعبء حقائبهم. وذخائرهم وأسلحتهم... تتوقف للاستراحة، أو عندما كان الرحل يتلقى أمراً بالتوقف لإقامة المخيم في نهاية نهار مضن... كنا نستطيع أن نرى شيء –كما سماه الكوبيون بكل مودة منذ الأوقات الأولى- وهو يخرج دفتراً صغيراً ويسجل فيه ملاحظاته بخط الطبيب الذي يصعب قراءته لصغر حروفه. إن ما استطاع حفظه من مذكراته ساعده فيما بعد على كتابة ذكرياته التاريخية البديعة عن الحرب الثورية في كوبا الفنية بمحتواها الثوري والتربوي والإنساني. وفي هذه المرة وبفضل تلك العادة التي لم يتخل عنها، عادة تسجيل الأحداث البارزة في كل يوم، نمتلك معلومات مفصلة في غاية الدقة، معلومات ثمينة عن الأشهر البطولية الأخيرة من حياته في بوليفيا، إن هذه اليوميات التي لم تكتب في الحقيقة كي تنشر، كانت تفيده كأدوات عمل للحكم باستمرار على الأحداث والحالات والأفراد، وكانت تتيح له إطلاق العنان لفكر النقاء الثاقب، وقد كتبت بشكل بسيط، وهي تشكل من البداية حتى النهاية كماً متناسقاً كل التناسق.
