"ولدت في الأرجنتين، وقاتلت في كوبا، وبدأت حياتي ثائراً في غواتيمالا" هكذا أوجز تشي غيفارا سيرة حياته، وهي أيضاً سيرة قارة وقعت في تناقض بين حكومات رجعية وثورات طوباوية. كان غيفارا أول رجل منذ أيام بوليفار يحمل خطة جدية لتوحيد مجموعة بلدان مقتتلة تدعي أميركا اللاتينية، وقد شهد في حياته من التطورات ما يثبت صحة نظرياته ونقيضها في آن واحد,
قاوم غيفارا المولود عام 1928 بشدة تاريخية بوصفه سليلاً لعائلة إسبانية ايرلندية كانت لها امتيازاتها ومكانتها. ومع ذلك فعلى الرغم مما يبدو على العائلة التي عاشت في المدينة الصغيرة التا غراسيا من تمسك ظاهري بالعادات والتقاليد فقد تميزت العائلة في الحقيقة بالتقدمية والنشاط والانفتاح الذهني. لم يثر أرنستو غيفارا الذي تكنّى فيما بعد "تشي" على الحرية الفكرية في منزله بل ثار على الاضطهاد الذي تتعرض له قارته.
وكما يشهد ريكاردو روجو، وهو صديق للعائلة، فقد كانت ثمة أشياء معينة مسلم بها في أسرة غيفارا-حب للعدالة، ورفض للفاشية، ولا مبالاة دينية، واهتمام بالأدب وحب للموسيقى وكراهية للمال ووسائل جمعه. لقد أدت هذه الظروف العائلية بصورة طبيعية إلى شعور التمرد مما دفع تشي لأن يصبح ثائراً حالماً يستطيع فهم المشاكل الاجتماعية لأميركا الجنوبية تلك كانت خلفية هذا الرجل الثوري، ولمن أراد الاضطلاع أكثر على سيرة غيفارا الشخصية والثورية فما عليه سوى الاضطلاع على مضمون هذا الكتاب من "سلسلة أعلام الفكر العالمي" والذي جاء بالأساس ليتحدث عن سيرة غفيارا وذلك من خلال قراءة واقع البيئة التي عاش فيها و الأوضاع السياسية التي عاصرها وكان له تأثير على مسيرة أحداثها.
