تحتل التجارة البحرية الجزء الأهم والأكبر من التجارة الدولية من قديم الزمان، بسبب توسط البحار بين مختلف الأقطار والقارات، وبسبب إنخفاض تكاليف النقل البحري وسهولته مقارنة بأجور وصعوبات النقل البري الذي يتم بواسطة السكك الحديدة والسيارات ووسائط النقل الأخرى، أو بالنسبة للنقل الجوي الذي لا يزال حتى الآن باهظ التكاليف وقاصراً عن تلبية حاجات المجتمعات البشرية. ويضاف إلى ذلك أن التجارة البحرية تتيح للتجار نقل كميات ضخمة من البضائع دفعة واحدة، حتى أن بعض السفن قد تجاوزت حمولتها مئات الآلف من الأطنان وهذه الميزة الهامة لا تتوافر في وسائط النقل الأخرى.
