لا يختلف اثنان في الزمن الراهن على أهمية الترجمة ومنافعها الكبيرة لعموم البشرية في العلم والاقتصاد والأدب "بل هي في أحيان كثيرة أداة من أدوات السلام والتفاهم والتعاون بين مختلف الشعوب... تقرب وجهات النظر وتنشر الأدب والمعرفة... إنها ضرورة من ضرورات العصر، وليس في اللغة العربية أو الإنجليزية، وإنما في جميع اللغات. وبسبب كون الترجمة فناً من فنون أدب اللغات الإنسانية، فقد كان لهذا النشاط الفني-الأدبي الفعال علماًؤه ومفكروه، وكان لهم نظريات شتى، تختلف باختلاف القناعات والأساليب المتبعة في الترجمة، فمنهم من كان يميل نحو المحافظة على حرفية النص وقوالبه، ومنهم من رأى بأن هذا النوع من الترجمة "النقل الحرفي" يقتل الترجمة فكان أن دعى هؤلاء إلى الاهتمام بالمعاني وليس بالمقررات اللغوية.
ومن خلال هذا الكتاب حاول المؤلف إلقاء الضوء على هذا الموضوع الهام في محاولة للتوصل إلى فهم أعمق للترجمة، وللتوصل إلى أسلوب أكمل يتيح للمترجم نقل التصرف بأمانة دون أن تفقد هذه النصوص الروح العلمية أو الأدبية التي تمتلكها. وقد دار بحثه حول المسائل التالية: الكلمة والجملة، أقسام الكلام، الترقيم والتنقيط، الجملة الإنكليزية، ملاحظات ومصاعب، النوع والأسلوب تدريبات عملية في ترجمة الجمل والنصوص، الممارسة، كلمات ومصطلحات مفيدة، نصوص في الترجمة الأدبية. بالإضافة إلى ذلك ضم الكتاب ملاحق ثلاث حول: 1-الأسماء العربية وما يقابلها في الإنكليزية 2-أسماء إنكليزية وما يقابلها في العربية، 3-مختصرات شائعة.
