يسعى المؤلف في كتابه "أوهام المؤلفين" في أحوال العلويين وبعد الإطلاع على بعض كتب المعاصرين والإستفادة من كتب السابقين إلى التصدي على بعض المؤلفات في أحوال المسلمين العلويين التي أسست على ظنون في التعرف إلى علمائهم وكتباً بنيت على أوهام في معرفة مذهبهم وفي أطوائها من الأخطاء ما لا يصح الإعتماد عليه.
كما قام على التنبيه على هذه الأوهام وكان منهجه في هذا الكتاب الإنصاف وإعطاء الحقوق لأهلها، كما اعتمد على قواعد الإملاء التي وضعها مجمع اللغة بدمشق، كما اعتمد على قواعد الإملاء التي وضعها مجمع اللغة بدمشق كما اعتمد علامات الترقيم وإستعمال الرموز، وضبط أسماء الأعلام، وتخريج الشواهد والآيات وذكر المصادر والمراجع.
إن النسبة في كلمة "علوي" على معنيين: أحدهما: النسبة الى الإمام علي بن أبي طالب عليه السلام وقد تكلم عليه غير واحد, وايجازه: العلوي قسمان: علوي نسباً وعلوي ولاء, والعلويون فئتان: علويو الهوية, وعلوية الطوية, وعلوي من جهة النسب, وعلوي من جهة الإيمان والمعرفة. ولم تخرج هذه النسبة عن النسب من قبل الأم والأب, والنسب في المذهب. والآخر: العلو في المعرفة, وشاهده المنقول من كلام الإمام الصادق عليه السلام في كتاب علل الشرائع, وفي بحار الأنوار: "المؤمن علوي لأنه علا في المعرفة."
