هذا بحث حاول فيه المؤلف دراسة لغة الشعر في ديوان سقط الزند لأبي العلاء المعري. والمعري كما هو معروف عنه كان ظاهرة نادرة في تاريخ الشعر العربي، وليس سهلاً على الباحث اقتحام عوالمه الواسعة ولقد اتخذ المؤلف ديوان سقط الزند مجالا لدراسته لأنه ديوانه الأول الذي مثل مرحلتين من مراحل المعري في تطوره الفني. أما الأول فهي المرحلة التي تتصل ببداياته وكانت آثار شاعرين من كبار شعراء العربية وهما أبو تمام والمتنبي واضحة فيها، فهو يعد التطور الناضج لمنهج هذين الشاعرين. أما المرحلة الثانية التي احتواها شعر السقط فهي نضجه الفني وفيها امتلك أدواته التعبيرية وظهرت ملامح شخصيته الفنية سواء في تجاربه الشعرية أو فيما كان يتخذه وسائل للتعبير عن هذه التجارب من وسائل اللغة والفن. وفي هذه المرحلة أصبحت القصيدة لديه ذات صوت علائي في استخدامه الألفاظ والتراكيب وأساليب ذلك كله وظواهره اللغوية الأسلوبية والفنية في تركيبه الشعري. وقد ضم هذا الديوان قصائد تمتد في زمنها من أوائل حياته الفنية في صباه حتى سنين متأخرة في حياته فهي تمثله في مختلف مراحل حياته، هذا وقد حاول المؤلف في دراسته هذه أن يختط منهجا لغويا غير منقطع عن مجالات الدرس الأخرى كالنقد اللغوي والأدبي، لأن دراسة لغة الشعر لا بد لها أن تتصل بذلك إضافة إلى وجوب اتصالها بالمعارف الأخرى، إفادتها منها إلا أن ذلك ينبغي له أن لا يطغى على الطابع اللغوي الأسلوبي للبحث.
