من الشعراء من ينشأ وفي نفسه قد نما حبُ المثال القديم، يتخذ منه نموذجاً في حياته وفي شعره. ومن الشعراء من نشأ وفي نفسه أثار القديم غير أن هذه الآثار لا تستطيع إخضاعه ولم تعد فيه المثال الوحيد الذي ينبغي له أن يقتدى به، وتتبع صورته، وإنما في نفسه دوافع وحواجز تفهم تلك الآثار وتنطلق بها إلى آفاق المستقبل تبحث عن مثالها الآتي لترسم له ملامح نموذج ليكون مثالاً للمعاصرين، و"المتنبي" رائد من رواد هذا التيار الثاني، فقد كان متمرداً رافضاً لتقاليد مجتمعه وما تعارف عليه في حياته أيضاً، وفي يده السيف يحيط به أحزانه بأسباب الكبرياء، ويعلن به عن موقفه.
كان أبو الطيب في قصيدته نموذج العربي الثائر من جهة، وملامحه الاجتماعية النقية من جهة أخرى، ورسوخه في الدفاع عن قيمه العربية الإنسانية الراسخة في أعماق هذه الأمة التي ينتمي إليها... وفي هذا البحث يكشف المؤلف عن ظواهر التمرد في شعر المتنبي، هذه الآفاق التي ما زالت مجهولة أو مازالت مهملة، وهدفه إلقاء الضوء على هذه الظواهر، وذلك لربط تيار الشعر الثوري الحديث الذي تمرد بشتى ألوان التمرد على البالي في التقاليد والزائف في السلوك وتحمل ما تحمل من ألوان الألم، وربطه بمثيله من الشعر العربي القديم الذي تمرد أيضاً على التقاليد ورفض الخضوع لإرادة الحكام.
