جمع الثعالبي في كتابه هذا طائفة من لطائف الأدب قولاً وشعراً ونثراً مما جاء في كلام الملوك والامراء والكبراء، وكلام طبقات الناس، وضروب العام والخاص في فنون المقاصد والأغراض، من جنس حرفهم وصناعاتهم، ومقتضى أمورهم وأحوالهم وأخرجه في ستة عشر باباً هي على التوالي: في ذكر الملوك والأمراء وكلاهم على مقاديرهم. في مسائل وجوابات مجموعة عن السرور، أعرب كل واحد من أصحابها عن صناعته، وتكلم عن حرفته، ومقتضى حاله، في ذكر الأدباء والنحويين، في ذكر الكتاب، في ذكر الفقهاء، في المحدثين وأشعارهم بعد أمثالهم، في ذكر القصاص والمتصوفة، في ذكر المعلمين والقراء، في ذكر الأطباء، في ذكر الوراقين، في ذكر الشعراء، في ذكر المنجمين ونظمهم ونثرهم، في ذكر التجار والسوقة وأمثالهم وكلامهم من جنس صناعتهم، في ذكر الدهاقين وكلامهم. في ذكر النبيذيين وأمثالهم في النبيذ، وفي ذكر المغنين والمطربين وأمثالهم في النبيذ، وفي ذكر المغني والمطربين. في ذكر أصحاب صناعات مختلفة.
وأما صاحب هذه اللطائف فهو أبو منصور عبد الملك بن محمد بن إسماعيل الثعالبي. ولد في نيسابور سنة 350هـ، ودفعت به أسرته إلى كتاتيب نيسابور، فلما تخرج ولج عالم المعرفة الذي استهواه، فتلمذ لابي بكر الخوارزمي، ثم اشتغل بمهنة التأديب، وظل شغفه بالعلم يدفعه إلى الاستزادة فغرف ما استطاع، وكان له تآليف كثيرة. وعلى الرغم مما قد تشير إليه قائمة مؤلفاته، من توزع جهد الرجل بين التأليف الأدبي واللغوي والتاريخي والموسوعي فإن الحقيقة التي لا مجال لمناقشتها هي أن الرجل تجرد لضرب من التخصص في دراسة أدب مرحلته، والذي يقرأ مقدمة "يتيمة الدهر" يضع يده على دوافع الاقتصار على أدب "المحدثين" و"العصريين" وكتابه "اللطف واللطائف" واحد من الكتب التي ضمتها مكتبة الثعالبي، له من سمات الجدة في المنهج والإضافة في الماضة، وعليه ما عليها من مآخذ تكرار المادة المودعة فيه بوجه عام.
أما منهج الكتاب، وكما يتبين للقارئ، فإنه قائم على جميع النصوص ضمن تبويب قائم على النظر إلى العلاقة بين طبقة القائل أو جنس صناعته أو تخصصه، وبين طبيعة القول الصادر عنه، وذلك ما حدده المؤلف في مقدمته.
