يقول أبو منصور الثعالبي في مقدمة الكتاب: قد ألفت هذا الكتاب للشيخ العميد أبي سهل الحمدوني، وإن كان هو شخص الكمال وفرد الزمان وغرة الشرق وأمين النطق، فلا بد لأهل الأدب وأصحاب الكتاب، وإن كانوا مخفضي الدرجات، من التفرب ببضاعتهم المزجاة إلى خزانة كتبه.
وفي هذا الكتاب الكثير من لطائف الظرفاء من طبقات الفضلاء قولًا وفعلًا، وجدًا وهزلا، وأودعه المؤلف ظرف الظرف وروح الروح وعقود الدر وعقد النحر نثرًا ونظمًا، فالألفاظ بين البلاغة والإيجاز، وخفة الأرواح مع الإعجاز، والمعاني بين الكرم والظرف والمروة والفتوة، مع المداعبة والمطايبة، والنوادر غير الفاترة. ويقع الكتاب في ستة عشر باباً، عقدها الثعالبي لأقوال طبقات الناس التي هي من جنس صناعاتهم، وجعل كل باب لطبقة، وأشار إلى أنه لم يسبق إلى مثل هذا المنهج.
