في عمله هذا يطرح حبيب معلوف الأبعاد الفكرية للمسألة البيئية، من خلال، تحديد موقع الإنسان؛ في الطبيعة والكون والمجتمع، وعلاقته بها وبما خلفها، وخصوصاً أن المسألة البيئية أصبحت في عالمنا المعاصر بمثابة خطر يهدد الحياة. من هنا يبدو قلق الكاتب على مصير الحياة، أرضاً وإنساناً ومخلوقات.
"على الحافة" تعني – في نظر الكاتب – المكان الذي يحمل خطر السقوط، المكان المحفوف بالمخاطر، أو الذي يقرب حد الخطر. الخطر على الواقف في المكان وعلى المكان نفسه. إنها تعني الوجود على الحرف أو على الطرف. وقد تعني التطرّف أيضاً. ولعل هذه الوضعية هي التي شكّلت هواجس الكاتب والدافع للكتابة تحت هذا العنوان.
يضم الكتاب، مجموعة من المقالات التي نشر معظمها في جريدة "السفير" والتي كُتبت في تواريخ وظروف مختلفة بين عامي 1998 والنصف الأول من العام 2001، بالإضافة إلى بعض المقالات التي نشرت في جريدتي "الحياة" و "النهار" بين عامي 1994 و 1998، مع بعض المحاور غير المنشورة سابقاً. وكل ذلك كُتب بخلفية ضاغطة وملحة، هي ما يحصل من تدمير للبيئة، وهي محاولة للبحث في الجذور الفلسفية للمسألة البيئية، ولتعميق النظرة إلى أسباب هذه الظاهرة من دون الإكتفاء بالأسباب والنتائج المباشرة.
إنها صرخة في وجه من يشوه البيئة ومحاولة جادة لرفع المشألة البيئية إلى مستوى القضية، مع ما يتطلبه ذلك من مراجعات لشتى أوجه النشاط البشري وكل ما أنتجه من نظام حضاري.
