يعتبر أحمد شوقي من أبرز شعراء العربية في القرن العشرين، وقد بلغ من الشهرة حداً بويع معه بإمارة الشعر. ومع ذلك كان ولا يزال موضع خلاف شديد بين النقاد إذ اعتبره كثيرون شاعراً "عباسياً" عاش في القرن العشرين، بينما رأى فيه آخرون عملاقاً من عمالقة الشعر العربي عبر القرون، وقد حاول المؤلف في هذه الدراسة الجميع بين الموضوعية والدقة والمشول والاختصار بما يوفق بين متطلبات البحث الأكاديمي وحاجة القارئ العادي. ثم اتبع الدراسة نماذج مختارة من نتاج شاعرنا تغني القارئ عن العودة إلى ديوانه.
