مع تقدم الطب احتلت الأشعة مكانها المناسب في هذه المسيرة، إذ غدت الأشعة وسيلة تشخيصية هامة جداً لا يمكن تجاهلها أو الاستغناء عنها، فأضحى التشخيص الشعاعي ومنذ بداية هذا القرن أساساً هاماً في كشف معظم الأمراض إن لم يكن كلها. وما أن اكتشف أستاذ الفيزياء الألماني رونتجن الأشعة السينية عام 1895 حتى أآخذت محاولات البحث والاستقصاء الشعاعي في المجال الطبي تزداد يوماً بعد يوم للاستفادة القصوى من هذا الاكتشاف، مما جعل للأشعة استخدامات متعددة، وساعدت على دراسة الأمراض واستقصانها في أجزاء الجسم كافة من الشرايين والأوردة وأجواف القلب إلى الدماغ... ومن هنا فإن معرفة مبادئ الأشعة الطبية واستخدامها لدى المختصين أمر لا مفر منه، وأصبح تدريسها للطلاب يستند إلى قواعد علمية هامة. فحتى يقرأ الطالب أو الطبيب الصورة الشعاعية لا بد له من أين كون ملماً بأصول قراءة هذه الوثيقة الهامة التي بين يديه والتي ستنير له طريقه في تشخيص الأمراض.
وُضع هذا الكتاب لفائدة طلاب الطب والمتخرجين الممارسين في المشافي والذين يحضرون لاختصاصات عالية في الطب والجراحة وهو يهدف إلى شرح الصور الشعاعية وتوضيحها في مجال الأمراض الشائعة بغية ترشيد قراءة الصور الصعبة. ولما كان الطالب بحاجة إلى قراءة الصور الشعاعية ومعرفة مدلولاتها، وضع في آخر الكتاب مجموعة من الصور الشعاعية لحالات طبيعية وأخرى مرضية وقد تركت هذه الصور دون تعليق ووضع حلها في الصفحات التي تليها.
