من هذا الذي أمسك الرسول بيمينه وقال عنه: "إن لكل أمة أميناً وأمين هذه الأمة أبو عبيدة بن الجراح"...؟ من هذا الذي أرسله النبي في غزوة ذات السلاسل مدداً لعمرو بن العاص، وجعله أميراً على جيش فيه أبو بكر وعمر..؟؟ من هذا الصحابي الذي كان أول من لقب بأمير الأمراء..؟؟ من هذا الطويل القامة النحيف الجسم، المعروق الوجه، الخفيف اللحية، الأثرم، ساقط الثنيتين..؟؟ أجل من هذا القوي الأمين الذي قال عنه عمر بن الخطاب وهو يجود بأنفاسه: "لو كان أبو عبيدة بن الجراح حياً لاستخلفته فإن سألني ربي عنه قلت: استخلفت أمين الله، وأمين رسول"...؟؟ أنه أبو عبيدة عامر بن عبد الله الجراح... أسلم على يد أبي بكر الصديق رضي الله عنه في الأيام الأولى للإسلام، قبل أن يدخل الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم دار الأرقم وهاجر إلى الحبشة في الهجرة الثانية، ثم عاد منها ليقف إلى جوار رسول الله في بدر، وأحد، وبقية المشاهد جميعها، ثم ليواصل سيره القوي الأمين بعد وفاة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم في صحبة خليفته أبي بكر، ثم في صحبة أمير المؤمنين عمر، نابذاً الدنيا وراء ظهره مستقبلاً تبعات دينه في زهد، وتقوى، وصمود وأمانة.
لم يهتم أبو عبيد بزخارف الحياة وزينتها، إنما كان قانعاً راضياً بما يكفيه من قوت ومعاش شأنه شأن جميع عظام القادة. ويكفيه فخراً أنه بعد عودته من الحبشة- بعد أن أسلم وهاجر إليها في بادئ إسلامه- عاد وشهد جميع المشاهد مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم. مفضلاً أن يكون جندياً في جيوش المسلمين، رغم رجاحة عقله واعتماد الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم وعلى إقدامه وبعده الخليفة أبو بكر الصديق وعمر الفاروق، حتى أنه عندما ولي أمر الغزوات فإنه كان يتبع مشورة كبار القادة في الجيش.
