عنوان هذا الكتاب "ذمّ النساء" يوحي بموقف سلبي من المرأة. ولكن العناية منه هي غير ذلك على الإطلاق. فالكتاب لا يريد أن يسجل موقفاً من المرأة، وإنما يريد أن يقدم صورة عن موقف الرجل بشكل عام من المرأة في المجتمع العربي الإسلامي، وتحديداً من خلال المأثور الثقافي والأدبي في التراث العربي.
وقد حصر المؤلف مادته في المأثور والتراثي، بهدف إلقاء نظرة على الخلفية الثقافية والمفهومية التي يستند إليها موقف الرجل العربي حالياً من المرأة. فهذا الموقف ليس ناشئاً جديداً أو منقطعاً عن سياق طويل في التاريخ والاجتماع والثقافة.
وفي سبيل هذه الغاية حرص المؤلف على أخذ مادة الكتاب من كتب التراث المعتبرة والمصادر الموثوقة. مثل "الأغانى" لأبي الفرج الأصفهاني، و"العقد الفريد" لابن عبد ربه، و"عيون الأخبار" لابن قتيبة، و"يتيمة الدهر" للثعالبي، وكتب الأمثال والنوادر والطرائف...
وقد رتب مادة الكتاب في فصول مختلفة حول موضوع أساسي واحد وهو "ذم النساء" أو ما قيل في ذمّ النساء، سواء عبّر ذلك عن موقف عام أو عن موقف خاص من امرأة بعينها أو عن حادثة أو طرفة، وراعى فيه جانبين: جانب المادة التراثية للتأمل والدراسة، وجانب التسلية والترويح وإشباع هوى النفس في البحث عن الملحة والطرفة والغرابة والنكتة اللطيفة.
