كثيرة هي الكتب التي تناولت أخبار النساء، قديماً وحديثاً، عرضت لسيرتهن وذكرت سائر ما يتصل بهن من غثٍّ وسمين، ولكن معظمها اقتصر على جانب دون آخر، عرض بعضها لأخبارهن، وعرض آخر لجمالهن ومحاسنهن، ومنها ما عرض لصفاتهن وأخلاقهن.
أما هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا، فقد توخى الإحاطة بكل ذلك؛ مورداً القرينة لكل فكرة، آية وحديثاً، نادرة وطرفة، قولاً مأثوراً وشعراً، وكان للغة نصيب كذلك. وقد رجع المؤلف في كل ما دون إلى سائر الكتب التراثية في هذا الموضوع: كالأصفهاني في أغانيه، وابن عبد ربه في عقده الفريد، الثعالبي، كذلك الأصمعي... لكن كتابين شكّلا مرجعاً رئيسياً لعمله هما: روضة الرياحين ونزهة المشتاقين لابن قيم الجوزية، ودولة النساء، الكشكول النسائي آخذاً منهما ما ينسجم وما يتلاءم مع موضوعه.
