وهذا الكتاب يقدم للطالب - في المرحلة الجامعية الأولى - مبادئ علم الأصوات ليتمكن من معرفة طبيعة الصوت ومخرجه وآلية خروجه وإدراكه، ووظيفته، وما يطرأ عليه من تغيرات، والعوامل التي تؤدّي إلى حدوث هذه التغيرات، كما وضّح الدرس الصوتي العربي التراثي في ضوء علم الأصوات المعاصر. وذلك من أجل تحقيق الأهداف الآتية:
1- أن يتمكن الطالب من وصف الصوت اللغوي وصفاً صحيحاً. 2- أن يميز الطالب أصوات لغته عن أصوات اللغات الأخرى. 3- أن يميز الطالب أصوات اللغة العربية الفصحى عن أصوات اللهجات. 4- أن يتمكن الطالب من النطق السليم لأصوات العربية الفصحى. 5- أن يوظف الطالب مهارته المكتسبة في تجويد القرآن الكريم. 6- أن يعرف الطالب تراثه في الدرس الصوتي.
