This course has been written on the basis of my experience of teaching the phonetics of English for English major students at Arab universities. It covers the syllabus of most B.A courses and leaves out much of what is of no great consequence to the needs of Arab students.
The ultimate aim of the course is to enable students to distinguish and produce all English sounds correctly and to pronounce words based on phonetic transcription.
The course comprises fourteen units. Unit one gives a brief definition of phonetics and phonology. Unit two identifies the organs involved in the production of speech sound. Unit three tries to formulate a method description and classification of the sound types which occur in speech. Units four and five set the stage for the description and classification of consonants and vowels. Unit six introduces phonetic transcription and the symbols used by the IPA to represent the consonants and the vowels of English. Unit seven is concerned with some basic concepts in phonology. A detailed description of the vowels and the consonants of English is presented in units eight and nine. Unit (10-13) deal with syllabes, week forms and the suprasegmental features of word stress. and unit 14 provides passages in phonetic transcription as well as conversational passages for practice.
