شغل طريق الحرب الذي كان له دور هام في فترات زمنية بعيدة، أذهان وخيال الكثيرين. وفي سبيل الحقيقة العلمية يضع المؤلف هذا الكتاب بين يدي القراء المهتمين حول مكانة طريق الحرير عند العرب والمسلمين وأهميته في التاريخ القديم والمعاصر وفي العلاقات التجارية والثقافية والعمرانية المتبادلة وذلك من خلال مشاهداته الشخصية أثناء اشتراكه في بعثة طريق الحرير في العام 1991، حيث سجل انطباعاته عن الموضوعات التي لفتت انتباهه وحفزته للتعليق على بعض المسائل التي استولت على مشاعره في هذه الرحلة.
من خلال جولة ميدانية في آسيا الوسطى قام بها المؤلف في صيف 1991 واطلع فيها على التطور الجديد الذي حدث في الاتحاد السوفييتي المنحل وزار في الجمهوريات الإسلامية الجنوبية المراكز التاريخية والأثرية والجغرافية المهمة على طريق الحرير.
الكتاب أيضاً ملف وجيز عن نشاطات البعثة التي نظمتها اليونسكو لإعادة اكتشاف طريق الحرير وتنشيط الحوار بين الشعوب. وبين السطور انطباعات للكاتب عن عدد من الشؤون السياسية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية المعاصرة أوحاها إليه جو الرحلة.
