والكاتبة تسرد وعلى لسان الجدة أسطورة الفتاة التي تعيش مع عائلتها في قصر فخم منيف، أرجاؤه واسعة، صمم بحيث يصد كل تقلبات الطبيعة ويرضي طموحات الإنسان ورغباته. وكان للعائلة لقاءاتها المنتظمة كل يوم على مائدة الإفطار والغداء والعشاء. والحياة داخل القصر مستقرة وروتينية إلى درجة لا يمكن تصور حدوث هزات ومفاجآت تغير هذا الجريان الزمني، وفي يوم من أيام الربيع، كانت الفتاة تطل من نافذة غرفتها إذا بباب القصر يطرقه شحاذ متسول، جميل الهيئة رفع رأسه إلى أعلى فالتقت نظراته مع نظرات الفتاة، فشعرت أن هناك شيئاً ما يسري من قمة رأسها إلى أخمص قدميها. وتتوغل الجدة في أعماق تفكيرها فتصف التمرد الحاصل في أعماقها، والأفكار التي تهاجمها وتتابع سرد هذه الأسطورة، التي قد تكون أحياناً أكثر حقيقة وشمولية مما تنقله الوقائع وتسطره الأحداث.
كانت لدي رؤى بأن الظلم والحرب تفرز واقعاً مريراً لا يستطيع الأحفاد التعايش معه، فمن المسؤول عن ماضي تهشم نتيجة رغبات جامحة ومن الذي يدفع ثمن تغيير أنماط الحياة كان من الصعب على الخال أن يخسر عالمه وكذلك ابن الأخت كل له عالمه ولكن هذه العوالم ظهرت وكأنها لا يمكن أن تتعايش معاًَ لأن لها رؤى مختلفة ومصالح متنا قصة لقد تكهنت بسقط البلد ونهب ممتلكاته كنتيجة حتمية لقمع الحريات وإزهاق النفوس لقد كانت الحيوانات نقطة قوة لأنها ممتلكات العائلة ونقطة ضعف لأنها لا حول لها ولا قوة فذهبت ضحية ذلك الصراع.
